COPHE – Serving Our Members Since 2001

The Council of Private Higher Education Inc. (COPHE) is a peak body representing Australian private higher education providers. We promote equity, choice and diversity in the sector. COPHE was established in 2001 to highlight the contribution made by the private sector to higher education in Australia and to advocate for sound public policy for all students – current and future.

The private higher education sector in Australia has been growing steadily and now enrols almost 10 per cent of Australian higher education students. The others are with government-supported public universities.

COPHE offers a network and forum for members, as well as services such as tuition assurance, a library consortium, TEQSA liaison and continuing professional development opportunities.

Our members operate from more than 70 campuses around Australia. They are diverse in size, funding base, organisational links and educational focus. Together they cater for over half of all private higher education students in Australia.

COPHE members offer courses taught and accredited by the national regulator, TEQSA, as being equivalent to those offered in public universities. In Australia, through TEQSA, there is now a single regulator, a single set of course standards and a single quality assurance process applied to all higher education providers, including public universities.

COPHE members offer degrees from undergraduate to PhD level and are well-established leaders in their respective fields, with several operating for over a century. Some of our members focus specifically on international students. COPHE is encouraging an expansion in international education across all members in the belief that we have a responsibility to educate global citizens.

The COPHE Executive Board and Members have engaged with most of the key issues facing higher education over the past 17 years. In January 2017, Mr Simon Finn commenced as COPHE’s new CEO. Mr Finn has extensive experience at senior levels of government and in public sector leadership, including serving as a State Government Minister.

The Council of Private Higher Education Incorporated is an Association incorporated in the Australian Capital Territory.
