Students Urged to Sign Petition Supporting Reforms

COPHE is urging the students of its members to sign a new petition asking Senators to pass the higher education reforms to deliver equity into the higher education system.

 “We choose these learning institutions because they suit our educational goals, career aspirations and personal circumstances,” the iPetition states. There are more than 100,000 students in Australia who choose to study with a non-university higher education provider. “Education is about increasing opportunity for all.”

The petition will be presented to key Senators in the coming weeks.

 COPHE CEO Adrian McComb said the Federal Government’s proposed changes to Australia’s higher education system represent a major development in equitable treatment for private students – and significant reductions in their costs.

 The reforms include:

  • Access to HECS support for all Australian students undertaking an accredited undergraduate course at any accredited Australian higher education institution such as public or private universities, TAFEs or colleges.
  • The removal of the existing loan fee of 25 per cent for FEE-HELP for undergraduates.
  • Fee deregulation so that universities can set their own tuition fees, providing variation and competition between public universities and private colleges plus more opportunities for students. Regulation will control excessive prices.

 “Senators need to be reminded of the other side of the story – the reforms are not just about ways of funding universities,” Mr McComb said. “We urge current and future students who want to have a greater choice of more flexible higher education providers to have their say too. The reforms will increase choice,diversity and equity for higher education students.”
